Kent Test dates: registration, test day and results timeline

Every date that matters for the Kent Test, from registration in June to offers day in March - and how the cycle fits together if your child is in Year 3, 4 or 5 now.

Reviewed 14 September 2026 against kent.gov.uk

The cycle at a glance

The Kent Test follows the same rhythm every year. Using the most recent cycle (the test sat in September 2026, for Year 7 entry in September 2027) as the template:

1 June
Registration opens
Register online at kent.gov.uk/kenttest. It's free, and one registration covers all 32+ Kent grammar schools. Access-arrangement requests (e.g. extra time for SEN) must also be made in this window.
1 July
Registration closes (midnight)
Hard deadline - late registrations are not accepted. Put it in the calendar the day your child starts Year 5.
Early September
Test day
Children at Kent primary schools sit the test in school on a Thursday in the second week of September (10 September in the latest cycle). Out-of-county and home-educated children sit at a test centre the following weekend.
Mid October
Results day
Decision emails arrive after 4pm (15 October in the latest cycle): your three standardised scores, the aggregate, and whether your child is assessed as suitable for grammar school.
2 November
School application deadline
Submit the Secondary Common Application Form (SCAF) to your local authority, listing schools in true preference order. The national 31 October date falls on a Saturday in 2026, so Kent's deadline is Monday 2 November.
1 March
National Offer Day
Secondary school places are allocated. If you didn't get your preferred grammar, appeals information follows.

If your child is in Year 5 now (test September 2027)

Kent County Council publishes the confirmed dates for each cycle in the spring before registration opens. Based on the established pattern, expect registration for the September 2027 test (Year 7 entry 2028) to open around 1 June 2027 and close around 1 July 2027, with the test in the second week of September 2027 and results in mid-October 2027. Always confirm on kent.gov.uk when the new leaflet is published - we'll update this page when it is.

Put this into practice

The free assessment shows exactly where your child stands against the real scoring system - and builds a week-by-week plan from there.

What this means for Year 3 and Year 4 parents

The dates above are fixed; the preparation window is not. Children who start structured practice in Year 3 or Year 4 simply have more weeks between them and test day - which is exactly why scores built gradually, week by week, beat cramming every time. A Year 3 starter has roughly 150 weekly practice cycles before their test; a Year 5 starter has about 50.

Common questions

When do Kent Test results come out?+
Mid-October, after 4pm, by email to the address you registered with (15 October in the 2026 cycle). You receive three standardised scores - English, maths and reasoning - plus the aggregate, and a decision of "suitable" or "not suitable" for grammar school.
Is registering for the Kent Test the same as applying for a school?+
No - and this trips families up every year. The Kent Test registration only enters your child for the test. You must separately submit the Secondary Common Application Form (SCAF) to your local authority by 2 November 2026, listing your preferred schools - our application guide walks through it step by step.
Can out-of-county children sit the Kent Test?+
Yes. They sit the same test at a test centre on the weekend after the main sitting, and are assessed against the same threshold. Bear in mind many schools use distance as an oversubscription tiebreaker.
What if we miss the registration deadline?+
Late registration is not accepted. In exceptional circumstances you can email kent.admissions@kent.gov.uk, but there is no guarantee - treat 1 July as immovable.
