Kent grammar schools: the complete list of all 32

Kent has more grammar schools than any other county in England - 32 of them, and every one selects using the same Kent Test. Here's the full list, grouped by area, with what makes each group different.

The big picture

Around 18,000 children sit the Kent Test each year competing for roughly 4,500 Year 7 grammar places - so about one in four ends up with an offer. Passing the test makes your child eligible for all 32 schools; each school then applies its own oversubscription criteria (catchment, distance, siblings) to decide who actually gets a place. The Medway towns run their own separate test and schools, so they're not on this list.

One test, one result, 32 options: a child who passes can apply to any Kent grammar on the common application form (deadline 2 November 2026). That makes it worth knowing the whole list - not just your nearest school.

North Kent (6 schools) - Dartford and Gravesend

Dartford Grammar School

Popular with London commuters (Ebbsfleet is nearby). Dartford Grammar for boys is one of Kent's two true super-selectives - expect to need a score well above the 345 threshold.

West Kent (7 schools) - Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells and Cranbrook

The Judd School
Boys, Tonbridge · Super-selective - ranks by score
Tonbridge Grammar School
Girls · Score-ranked within its priority area
The Skinners' School
Boys, Tunbridge Wells · Distance and priority area
Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys
Boys · Distance and priority area
Tunbridge Wells Girls' Grammar School
Girls · Distance and priority area
Weald of Kent Grammar School
Girls, Tonbridge (annexe in Sevenoaks) · Distance and priority area
Cranbrook School
Co-ed, boarding and day · Distance based - Kent's only co-ed boarding grammar

The most competitive corner of the county. The Judd is Kent's other super-selective, and the west Kent grammars' priority areas are tightly drawn - check the named parishes and postcodes carefully before assuming you're in.

Passing the test vs getting a place

Every school above uses the same threshold: an aggregate of 345 with no subject below 111 (2026 cycle). But most schools are oversubscribed, so the threshold is only the entry ticket - how you rank schools on the application form matters just as much, which is covered in our SCAF application guide. Broadly there are two models:

Score-ranked (super-selective)
The Judd and Dartford Grammar fill mainly by ranking scores highest-first - recent intakes have effectively needed 380+. Tonbridge Grammar also ranks by score within its priority area.
Distance / area based
The majority of schools: any child who passes is in the pool, then priority areas, distance from the school gates and siblings decide. A 345 can be enough at a school where you live close; nowhere near enough at one 20 miles away.

Always read the admissions policy of the specific schools you'd consider - the criteria and the maps change, and the school (not KCC) is the final authority. Our pass mark guide explains what score to aim for depending on which of these groups you're targeting.

Common questions

How many grammar schools are there in Kent?+
32 in the Kent County Council area - the largest grammar school system in England. The Medway towns (Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham) run a separate group of schools with their own Medway Test, so they don't count towards the 32.
Which Kent grammar schools are super-selective?+
The Judd School (Tonbridge, boys) and Dartford Grammar School (boys) are the two true super-selectives, filling places by ranking the highest scores. Tonbridge Grammar also ranks by score within its priority area. Recent competitive scores at these schools have been well above 380, versus the 345 standard threshold.
Can my child apply to more than one grammar school?+
Yes - one Kent Test result covers all 32 schools. You list your preferences on the common application form (up to four schools, submitted by 2 November 2026), so it pays to know the whole list rather than fixating on one.
Do grammar school places depend on where we live?+
For most schools, yes - after the pass, priority areas, distance and siblings decide who gets in. Only the super-selectives put score above geography. Check each school's admissions policy for its exact catchment map before you apply.
Are there any co-ed grammar schools in Kent?+
A handful: Cranbrook School (which also offers boarding), Queen Elizabeth's in Faversham, Barton Court in Canterbury, Sir Roger Manwood's in Sandwich, Chatham & Clarendon in Ramsgate and Dane Court in Broadstairs. Most Kent grammars are single-sex.
